Research suggests that the well-being of children and their families are inextricably linked and that the involvement of family members in the care of childhood psychiatric disorders can significantly improve outcomes for patients.  In this interactive workshop, we will present foundational research on the role of family-centered approaches to mitigate stress and promote resilience in children and families affected by stress and trauma.   Core intervention practices of family-centered behavioral health care will be presented in the context of Families Over Coming Under Stress (FOCUS), a resilience enhancing program for families with children who face adversity and traumatic stress across a variety of situations.  FOCUS core components include trauma-informed assessment, psychoeducation, development of individual and family narratives, and core skills to support resilience (communication, emotional regulation, goal setting, problem solving and managing traumatic reminders).  FOCUS has been implemented with about 15,000 families and has been shown to reduce psychological health symptoms in adults and children, improve coping and prosocial skills in youth, and improve family communication and functioning over longitudinal follow up.  We will provide also demonstrate examples and provide interactive learning opportunities to develop these approaches to use with families including narrative work and family-level resilience skills.
